And here we are, creatures, in the most enchanted place of the garden of enchantments, here a multitude of roaring people fill the clearing while wonderful things happen: lights of the most surprising shades turn on and off in the air like will-o'-the-wisps, intense perfumes rain on the bystanders , shadows and faces without consistency seem to sail here and there and a thousand other amazing things happen or seem about to happen at any moment.

What can most amaze those who observe the people they find themselves walking through, now as spectators, now as actors, the garden of enchantments is the behavior of all these individuals, which often appears totally irrational and beyond any common logic. tending, at times, to fade into fanaticism and the most sinister credulity.
